Benchmark energy use: U.S. Energy Information Administration, 2018 Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS), Tables C1 and C12 — energy intensity per square foot by building type, with the 25th/median/75th percentile spread and the electricity share of each type's fuel mix.
Utility prices: EIA Electric Power Monthly Table 5.6.A (commercial cents per kWh by state) and EIA commercial natural gas price by state.
Savings range: Madison Energy's published results across 1,500+ completed projects put savings at 20–40%. Where your building lands inside that range is set by how far it runs above or below the CBECS median, plus your HVAC age and lighting answers.
Payback: Madison's published typical range of 18–24 months. The project budget figure is what a project would need to cost to hit that payback on your estimated savings — a scale indicator, not a quote.
